When should Safety Data Sheets be reviewed?

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) should be reviewed before using a new chemical because they contain critical information about the hazards associated with that chemical, as well as guidance on how to handle it safely. This information includes details on the chemical's properties, exposure limits, first-aid measures, and emergency procedures, which ensures that individuals working with or around the chemical are aware of potential risks and how to mitigate them.

Reviewing the SDS prior to the use of a new chemical is essential for maintaining a safe work environment. It allows workers to understand the necessary precautions and personal protective equipment (PPE) required for safe handling. If the SDS is not reviewed before using a new chemical, there could be an increased risk of accidents, exposure, or improper handling.

In contrast, other options do not adequately capture the purpose and timing of reviewing SDS. Relying solely on employee onboarding or reviewing them monthly does not ensure that workers are fully informed about the specific hazards of chemicals they are currently handling. Additionally, reviewing SDS only in the event of an accident is reactive rather than proactive and does not help prevent accidents from occurring in the first place.
